Privacy Policy

In order to protect your privacy and establish our relationship to your online presence, the following privacy policy was created in coordination with the Stanford Privacy Offices, specifcally aimed at disclosing how we may use data gathered from online means, including but not limited to online social media advertising, social posts, and information gathered from online interest surveys.


Notice of Privacy Practices for Online Presence and Social Media Ads

Stanford University (“Stanford”) and the Stanford Vision and NeuroDevelopment Lab (“SVNDL”), part of the Stanford Center for Infant Studies (“CFIS”), know you care about the privacy and confidentiality of your information. We take protecting your privacy very seriously. Please read the following to learn more about how we treat your information collected from Facebook as part of the Vision and NeuroDevelopment Lab and Center for Infant Studies research program. SVNDL is a psychology research laboratory administered by Stanford University and part of a three lab research group called the Center for Infant Studies. The Center for Infant Studies coordinates research on vision, language, and learning development from infancy to early childhood. By providing information to SVNDL, you acknowledge that you accept the practices and policies outlined in this Notice of Privacy Practices (“Privacy Policy”).

Privacy Policy Coverage/Applicability

This Privacy Policy covers our treatment of personal information that we gather when adults or interested parents (“you”) complete our Interest Questionnaire linked on our Facebook/social media Ads.

Information SVNDL Collects

We obtain the name, phone number, email address and demographic information, and general information about your child that you personally provide on our linked Interest Questionnaire. We will only collect information you voluntarily provide. We have no control over how Facebook/social media sites processes your information related to viewing and clicking our ad, or if it collects additional information from you. You should review Facebook’s the social media site’s privacy policy closely.

How SVNDL and CFIS Use Your Information

We will use your data only for the purpose of contacting you and recruiting you to participate in research, in particular to notify you of research studies taking place at SVNDL or another CFIS lab for which your child is eligible. Most information about you and your child will be collected during the subsequent contact call, and not online via social media ads.Eligibility for a particular study is usually determined by your child’s age or ability to perform a certain task (e.g. must be capable of speaking to participate in study on language). Sometimes eligibility is determined by contacting you to ask for more information on certain topics of your child’s development and abilities. Information provided to SVNDL and CFIS in the Interest Questionnaire is contact information and general information on your child for the basis of completing a subsequent contact call.

Information SVNDL Shares with Third Parties

We will not share your identifiable data with any organization outside of Stanford. SVNDL will never sell, rent or lease your information. We have no control over whether or how Facebook shares your information. You should review Facebook’s the site’s privacy policy closely.

How SVNDL Protects Your Personal Information

We will not share your identifiable data with any organization outside of Stanford. SVNDL and CFIS will never sell, rent or lease your information. We have no control over whether or how Facebook shares any information related to you clicking our ad. You should review Facebook’s privacy policy closely. The information you give us is maintained in a secured, HIPAA compliant database called REDCapat Stanford. Only CFIS researchers have access to this database, including your information. Other ways we keep your information safe include:

  1. Protecting the transmission of your information over the Internet, through the use of encryption, such as the Secure Socket Layer (SSL) protocol;
  2. Storing information we collect on computer systems located in controlled facilities with limited access;
  3. Using a variety of security technologies and procedures to help protect your personal information from unauthorized access, use, or disclosures;
  4. Limiting data access to only authorized personnel with a need to perform a specific job; and
  5. Training all SVNDL and CFIS employees on our security and privacy practices.

We endeavor to protect the privacy of the personal information we hold in our records, but we cannot guarantee complete security. Unauthorized entry or use, hardware or software failure, and other factors, may compromise the security of your personal information. We will notify you of any security incidents that compromise the security, confidentiality or integrity of your personal information in accordance with applicable state and federal laws.

Knowing Your Choices

You may choose not to complete SVNDL/CFIS questionnaires or participate in our studies.

By providing personal information to SVNDL and CFIS, you are choosing to be contacted regarding potential research participation opportunities as they arise, but not committing to participate in any specific study. Notifications about additional programs and services will provide the opportunity to “opt-out” of future notifications.

If you do not wish to receive information or other notices from us in the future, you can “opt-out” by contacting us at the e-mail address or the phone number indicated at the end of this policy.

Changes to this Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy will be updated periodically to reflect any material changes in our programs and practices. These changes will be evident by inserting a new “Effective Date” (see below) and are effective when they are posted to our website at: svndl.stanford.edu. Treatment of information we collect now is subject to the version of the Privacy Policy in effect at the time such information is used.
